Howard ‘Jeep' Herbert

Rotterdam -- Howard “Jeep” Herbert, 75, champion race car driver, of O'Brien Avenue, Rotterdam, N.Y.  passed away on Friday, November 29, 2002 at home after a short illness.

He was born on April 14, 1927 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to the late Clifford and Viola Drobek Herbert. He lived in the community for most of his life and was a graduate of the Schenectady School System. Mr. Herbert was a records management consultant for the Research Foundation of Albany for the State of New York for over 20 years, retiring in 1992. Previously, he had worked for the former Army Depot for over 20 years.

For years, Jeep was a famous race car driver. He was New York State Champion in 1956 to 1957, Fonda Race Track champion in 1969, and a member of the Fonda Race Track Hall of Fame, NYSCA Hall of Fame, and DIRT Track Hall of Fame in Syracuse. Jeep raced at Arlington, Brookfield, Burden Lake, Canandaigua, Concord, Daytona Beach/International, Fairmont, Fonda, Fort Covington, Granville, Langhorne, Lebanon Valley, Menands, Morris, Morristown, Middletown, Onteora, Perth, Pine Bowl, Pitman, Plattsburgh, Richfield Springs, Rochester, Rutland, Sharon Springs, Stafford Springs, Stateline, Syracuse, Thompson, Trenton, Utica–Rome, Victoria, Vineland, Warrensburg, Westerlo, West Perth, White's Beach, and Williamson.

He was predeceased by his wife, Dolores Bordeau Herbert, who passed away on July 18, 2002.

He is survived by two brothers, James E. Herbert of Pattersonville and Clayton T. Herbert of Scotia; two nieces and two nephews.

He was also predeceased by a brother, Clifford E. Herbert, Jr.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday morning Dec. 3rd. at 8 a.m. from the Light's Funeral Home, 1428 State Street, and at 9 a.m. at St. Gabriel's Church, where the Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Relatives and friends are invited to attend and may also call on Monday evening Dec 2nd. from 6 to 8 p.m. at Light's Funeral Home.

Interment will be at Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery
